The power plant uses water that Statkraft releases from Lake Sysenvatnet to maintain the required minimum rate of water flow over the Vøringsfossen waterfall.
Vøringsfossen is one of Norway's biggest tourist attractions, and hydropower developers are required to maintain a minimum water flow of 12 cubic metres per second over the waterfall between 1 June and 15 September.
The power plant is equipped with a Francis turbine which uses a maximum height of fall of 90 metres.
The Sysen dam, which regulates Lake Sysenvatnet, is one of Norway's largest rock fill dams and has an overall length of 1,160 metres.
The power plant was commissioned in the summer of 2011.
Statkraft is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of Leiro power plant. The other owners are BKK (Bergenshalvøens Kommunale Kraftselskap) and SKL (Sunnhordland Kraftlag).
